Aren't these so cute?! I'm still on a cart this year so I'm still coming up with messy free art projects for my students. This art project is easy and a good one for a substitute art teacher. I provided 8" x 11" paper with a box already drawn in the middle of the paper. You could have your students make the box if you wanted. There are many examples of these all over Pinterest so this is not my original idea. 

Here is a video of me teaching it.

Students drew a head around the box and then added eyes, tongue, teeth etc. I instructed the kiddos are how to fold the paper to make the mouth open and close. They really love these and had so much fun. I couldn't decide on which ones to post so here are lots of examples!! These are all from my kindergartners! Of course this was done in May and not August!! I actually taught this virtually during our COVID lockdown.

For this lesson I provided drawing paper with a blank sun. 

I have actually taught this lesson virtually and had the kids trace a lid and draw triangles around the circle for a sun. It's a little tricky for kindergarteners so I decided to provide these patterns for them. 

Students were instructed to draw a face on the circle and then add various patterns on each triangle. 

The last steps were to trace the sun with a black crayon and color the sky.

Here is a great lesson to teach children in the spring. Takashi Murakami is a contemporary Japanese artist who is known for his sculptures and paintings as well as commercial media.  Children love his art as many of them look cartoonish. 

This lesson is based on his Flowers with Smiley Faces. 

Students started their flowers by making a circle in the  middle (they could trace the lid of their glue sticks if they wanted) of a 12" x 9" piece of drawing paper. The next step was to draw 12 lines around the circle making sure to space them evenly. The last step was to draw arches to connect the lines. 

Students colored their flowers with neon sharpies (they love these!) and traced the lines with a black marker. 

The last steps were to cut them out, assemble them on construction paper, glue and draw stems coming out of the circles.

Here is a great lesson to teach virtually. It's also a messy free project for those of you who are teaching on a cart. I got the idea from Mrs. Knight's Smartest Artists. You can see her original post here Pop up architecture. I just changed it a bit to fit my needs. 

This is my demonstration video. 

Students folded their choice of colored cardstock in half and cut two slits on the fold. 

I instructed the students to make sure the folded part of their paper was facing their bodies and then they could cut on the fold. I walked around the room and checked each one before they could cut. Remember they are kindergarteners! 

They were then instructed to draw buildings above the fold and a road on the bottom fold. 

I provided squares of white cardstock for students to draw a building. They then glued them to their slit. 

These are so cute and the kids were really excited about them!

I borrowed this lesson from Kitchen table classroom. I just changed it some to fit the needs of my classroom. You can watch my demonstration video below.

I instructed students to draw big circles all over their 12" x 18" piece of drawing paper first. They drew various lines around the circles to create unique looking flowers. 

 Students then added big thick stems and leaves to the bottom of their flowers. 

My kindergarteners then used crayons to color the flowers and lastly outlined all the details with a black crayon. 

I love these! I think these would make a great Mother's Day gift!

Here is another idea I borrowed from Pinterest. You can find the original post here Art with Jenny K. She actually taught it to first graders but I thought my kindergarteners could do it at the end of the year. I changed it a bit to fit the needs of my classroom. You can watch my demonstration video below.

I showed the students lots of examples of self portraits by Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo and Rembrandt. I love to show the self portraits of Rembrandt since he would dress up in costumes and paint himself! 

Students folded an 18" x 6" piece of drawing paper into fours. 

I instructed the students on how to draw the body into each of the four sections. 

They added details and a background. The last step was to trace everything with a black crayon.

Hello! I'm still teaching on a cart because of COVID! 

As you might know many of the classes at my school do not have sinks so I'm trying to come up with messy free art projects for the kids. Believe me it has been a challenge! 

This is one I came up with that is all about Keith Haring. 

I have this board book in my art library titled "Pop Art Baby". It is perfect for my emergent readers (it only has a few words) and it is a board book so it wipes clean!

There are many books available on Andy Warhol as well as kid friendly videos on You Tube.

We modeled our art project after his "Dancing Figures". Students glued a piece of 6" x 18"  purple paper to a 12" x 18" piece of yellow construction paper. They added lines or dots to show rhythm at the bottom with a black marker. 

We drew stick figures onto  4" x 4" pieces of construction paper and then drew bubbles around them. Remind the kids to draw  fat bubbles! 

Students used red, green and orange paper for the figures. 

The last part was to cut them out, glue them down and add lines to show the movement! Remind students to put glue on the pencil side. 

They really enjoyed this lesson!

I'm still teaching on a cart and still racking my brain to come up with ideas that aren't messy and don't require a sink! 

This is one I came up with while I was reviewing the beautiful art of Yayoi Kusama. My kindergarteners absolutely loved her polka dot inspired art! You can watch my demonstration video below.

Students used paint daubers to press dots all over their choice of 12" x 9" colored construction paper.

They dry really fast! 

I did a step by step tutorial on how to draw the mushroom by having the students fold a 9" x 12" multi media paper into fours to create a nice grid. 

 They did such a great job with their drawings! 

Students used neon oil pastels to color their mushrooms and outlined them with a black oil pastel. 

The last step was to cut them out and glue to the middle of their dotted paper. 

I'm so proud of the hard work they put into these!
