4th grade holiday light oil pastel and chalk collage

4th-grade holiday light oil pastel and chalk collage

Thank you to https://www.artwithmrsfilmore.com/holiday-lights-5th-grade/ for this great lesson!

I did this with my 4th graders and they had so much fun!

I provided a pattern of a bulb for students to trace. They traced six of these on a 12" x 9" piece of black paper. Remind them to put them close to the top and beside each other or they won't have enough room for all six!

Students could use either neon or regular oil pastels to color in their bulbs. After they were colored, they traced the bulb pattern six times onto a 12" x 18" piece of black construction paper with a slightly curved line in the middle. They took a white colored chalk and blended lines around the bulb and then added another colored chalk to the white to match each bulb. The last step was to cut them out and glue each bulb to the outline.

They loved making these and all of them were successful!

2nd grade winter construction paper tree collage

2nd grade winter construction paper tree collage

I found this idea on Pinterest but it did not have a link. I only saw the image so if you know where the original idea came from please post a comment. Thanks!

I provided various shades of green construction paper in two sizes, 6" x 4 1/2" and 3" x 2 1/2"  for students to make their trees. They folded the paper in half, took a ruler and drew a diagonal line from one corner to the other, and cut it. My 2nd graders then cut little snippets of paper from the folded sides of the triangle (don't forget to remind them to not cut the bottom of the triangle). We discussed overlapping and how trees in the woods look. They glued their trees onto a 12" x 18" piece of blue construction paper. The last steps were to cut little snowflakes from 1 1/2" squares of white paper and draw  dots of snow with an oil pastel.

They really enjoyed this lesson!

1st grade holiday ornaments

 1st Grade Holiday Ornaments

My 1st graders received about a fist-sized amount of air-dried clay for these adorable ornaments. They flattened them out on a board and then used rolling pins to flatten them out. I provided patterns of stars, circles, or hearts for them to trace around with a wooden stylus stick. They could add textures with additional tools such as textured rolling pins and paint combs. The last step was to poke a hole towards the top for the string. I thought it would be too challenging for them to carve their initials on the back so I provided slips of paper for them to write their names. They placed these under their clay after they were finished.

After they were dry (they only took about a week) students used acrylic paint to paint one side. They wrote their names with a black permanent marker on the back. The last step was for me to spray them with acrylic gloss and string a piece of yarn in the holes for them. I also wrapped them in donated bubble wrap for the trip home.

kindergarten ornament collage

 Kindergarten ornament collage

I found this idea on Pinterest. I just changed it a bit to fit the needs of my kindergarteners. You can see the original post here https://stranamasterov.ru/node/1126042

I provided my students with an ornament template on a 12" x 9" construction paper. We reviewed patterns in art and discussed the many possibilities of what we could draw on the circles. I have a craftsmanship poster posted in my room so they know they must use good coloring and cutting skills when creating their art.

Students cut the ornaments out, glued them to a 12" x 18" piece of red construction paper, drew lines for the string, and added snowflakes with a white oil pastel. I think they did an amazing job!!!
