My 3rd graders viewed Picasso's Blue and Rose period paintings and we discussed how colors can convey emotions. Thanks to Art Projects for Kids https://artprojectsforkids.org/picasso-projects-for-kids/ for the idea. I just changed it a bit. 

Students folded their 12" x 9" multimedia paper into fours which acted like a guide to help them draw big! After they drew the self-portrait,  they traced it with a black permanent marker, made a pattern with a white crayon on their shirt and background (if they wanted to), and then used liquid watercolors to paint over the entire thing. They turned out beautifully!

         This is always a favorite lesson. Students get to use tissue paper, mod podge and oil pastels. This idea came from Mrs. Picasso's art room. For some reason it won't let me share the link to the original idea. This is how we made ours. 

Students used mod podge and attached warm colored tissue paper squares onto a multi media 12" x 9" piece of paper. When I ran out of mod podge I made the homemade version of just glue and water. 

          On day two, students glued a 12" x 9" piece of blue construction paper onto a piece of black                                            construction paper. I think the size was around 18" x 12". 

                        They drew swirls with oil pastels (only cool colors) all around the blue paper. 

On the tissue paper collage they turned it on the back and drew a large leaf. They cut this out and then drew the veins on the front (sorry I forgot to take pictures). The last step was to glue it in the middle of their blue paper. They loved these!

Students viewed the many paintings of Gustav Klimt, especially studying his "Tree of Life"  painting. 

They  could use a sharpie or an oil pastel to draw the tree. 

They then picked either warm or cool watercolors and painted squares of colors in the background. We review the terms positive and negative spaces.

This lesson is based on the famous painting "The Scream".

I got this idea from the book "Get into 

Art! People" by Susie Brooks. I changed it a bit to fit the needs of my classroom. 

We discussed the painting "The Scream" noting the warm colors  and what we thought was going on in the painting. 

I explained to the children that they would have two choices. They could either make their person yawning or their person screaming. If they made their person yawning then they had to use cool colors and if they made their person screaming they had to use the warm colors. 

I then taught the children how to make a simple person and reminded them on using good craftsmanship skills when coloring. They did amazing!!! 

The last step was to use cool or warm colors of paint sticks to make lines going around the person. I'm still on a cart because of COVID so anything I can use that has less mess is what I'm using this year! 

We used Colorations Paint sticks. 

I love these!! They really enjoyed the paint sticks and were so quiet with this activity. This one is a keeper! 

Most of the students chose to do their person yawning. I'm not sure why!

She actually did it for 1st graders. I changed it a bit to fit the needs of my kindergarteners. 

I did a step by step tutorial on how to draw the penguin with the class. I always have to stress to make their drawings big and to use the whole paper. We always practice drawing with our fingers first before we draw the actual subject. They actually did great on this.

Students used the cool colors of paint sticks to make swirls all over their 12" x 18" drawing paper. I wanted them to use cool colors to make a wintery feeling. They turned out great! Thanks to Cassie Stephens for the idea!
