I found the inspiration for this lesson on the blog Newton Bateman Art Department. I'm not sure what they were teaching but I changed it to fit the needs of my lesson. Thanks for the inspiration! 

We studied the art of Romero Britto and his bright colors and patterns and then got to work. 

Students could free hand or  use a lid to trace the middle of their flower. They then added the petals and drew patterns on it with a sharpie. 

I found some pattern ideas on line for those students who needed an inspiration. 

Students used crayons to color the flower and then the last step was to paint the entire drawing with liquid watercolors. They did an amazing job!

I found this lesson on the Jamestown elementary blog. I'm not sure what they were teaching but I decided to tie it into Pop art. Andy Warhol has some great art featuring hearts and he even has a painting of an actual heart. Students are learning about the real heart in their classroom so I was so excited to find Andy Warhol's print of a human heart. Don't worry his heart doesn't look gross! It is very simplified. 

I thought I would have the students draw their own squares on the Square 1 Art paper but it was easy for me just to copy them on the copy machine. 

I provided students with a small piece of paper and reviewed with them on how to make a heart by folding their paper in half. I'm amazed with how many couldn't remember or didn't know how to make one! Students then traced their heart in each square of their paper. 

The next step was to draw various patterns in each section. I provided examples to give them inspiration but I encouraged them to come up with their own!  

Students could draw with their sharpies or draw with a pencil first and then trace them. My 4th graders then colored them with crayons and painted over them with liquid watercolors. They are beautiful!

I found this art lesson on Instagram from scholtenart. He has some great ideas!

I went ahead and copied four boxes on the square 1 art paper for the kiddos. This makes life so much easier! 

On the square 1 art paper that is provided I printed four boxes on the copier. On this paper students used cool colored tempera paint and painted each box. Remind them to not paint over the line where their school and name appears!

On an 8" x 8" square piece of paper students painted the warm colors and then took a paint comb and scraped various lines through out the paint. 

This was day one. 

On the second day, I helped them lay out the stencils for LOVE (except the O) on the 8" x 8" paper. They traced the letters with a black crayon and then cut them out. 

While they were working on this I went around the room and painted their hand for the letter "O" of their art project. Students then glued the letters to their square 1 art paper. Since this is at the beginning of the year some of my kiddos had trouble cutting out the "E" but overall everyone did great!

I always do my Square 1 Art at the beginning of the year so families can order things in time for Christmas. This can be a challenge since kindergarteners have limited skills at the beginning of the year! 

I came across this lesson here The Clever Feather.

I printed off hearts on each cardstock the company provides for the students. 

My only direction was to fill the whole page with color. Since it was the first two weeks of school I had to teach the basics of watercolors and how to use a paint brush properly. I did remove the black and brown paint palettes from the trays (don't want a muddy mess on these!). Other then that they were free to create anything they wanted!

I always like to have my fundraiser at the beginning of the year so that the orders come in time for Christmas. This being said, it is hard to come up with a project for kindergarten. Some are just learning how to write their names as well as learning other skills necessary for school. Paint daubers are pretty easy for kindergarten so I decided to use them for this project. You can buy them already filled or buy empty ones to fill up yourself. I bought the kind you fill up. Just check the various art supply stores for these. 

Students used paint daubers filled with washable tempera paint and covered their papers with the various dots. 

The paint dried pretty quickly (we have 50 minute class periods) so I called students over to my table and painted their hands with black tempera paint. After they dried they printed their names.
After doing about five classes (I have nine kindergarten classes) I found it was more efficient to have them write their name first and then do their hand prints. You need to watch where they write their names since they could be cut off when Square 1 Art scans them to place on their products.

 The kids had so much fun doing this. I'm hoping the parents will love them!
