4th grade square 1 art pop art hearts

 4th grade square 1 art

I found this lesson on the Jamestown elementary blog. I'm not sure what they were teaching but I decided to tie it into Pop art. Andy Warhol has some great art featuring hearts and he even has a painting of an actual heart. Students are learning about the real heart in their classroom so I was so excited to find Andy Warhol's print of a human heart. Don't worry his heart doesn't look gross! It is very simplified.
I thought I would have the students draw their own squares on the Square 1 Art paper but it was easy for me just to copy them on the copy machine.

I provided students with a small piece of paper and reviewed with them on how to make a heart by folding their paper in half. I'm amazed with how many couldn't remember or didn't know how to make one! Students then traced their heart in each square of their paper.
The next step was to draw various patterns in each section. I provided examples to give them inspiration but I encouraged them to come up with their own!

Students could draw with their sharpies or draw with a pencil first and then trace them. My 4th graders then colored them with crayons and painted over them with liquid watercolors. They are beautiful!

Wayne Thiebaud kindergarten birthday cake art lesson

Kindergarten birthday cake drawing art lesson

Sorry no photos for this lesson. I retired and the last month of school I did not save my class photos on this blog. But here is my video!

Here is the video I recorded for  virtual learning during COVID.
We discussed the art of Wayne Thiebaud especially  his cake paintings.
In kindergarten students are taught the 3-D shapes in their classrooms so this was perfect to tie in their general education curriculum.
I did a step by step tutorial of how to draw the cake and then the kiddos could add their own touches. This was completed in May so my kindergartens had grown quite a bit in their skills. Students used crayons and a 12" x 9" piece of drawing paper for the lesson.

I love how they all turned out so differently!

Andy Warhol complementary colored hand prints

Andy Warhol complementary colors
  1st grade

I found this idea from http://aschukei.blogspot.com/2014/04/kindergarten-andy-warhol-pop-art-hands.html. I did change it a bit to fit the needs of my first graders.
Children love pop art. I introduced the children to Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup cans, coke cans and his celebrity paintings. Of course many of them didn't know who Marilyn Monroe was but they recognized the soup and coke cans. I also have some children's books about Andy Warhol available for the kids to look at in my art library in the classroom. When students are finished with their art projects they can visit my art library.

We discussed complementary colors and I found a couple of videos on YouTube for the kids to watch (they were only a couple of minutes).

After our discussion we folded our paper into six sections. Students then traced their hand with a pencil in each box.

Students then began to paint the primary and secondary colors (I used tempera paint) around their hands. This took part of the lesson was fifty minutes.

On Day two, students painted the inside of their hands with its complementary color.

I think the parents will love this project. Anything with  a hand print is always a hit.
