All For Art Fundraiser 2019

I completely forgot to write about our "All for Art" fundraiser last year. Forgive me!

I started this around five years ago and the kids love it!

We have a contest to see what class brings in the most money to buy a new painting for our art gallery. The winning class gets to paint or slime the gym teacher. He is such a good sport.

This year we had enough money to buy two pieces of art!

We all assembled in the gym and had a big unveiling!

Pop Art Numbers kindergarten lesson

My demonstration video.

It's January and my kindergarten students are showing so much growth! Our classroom teachers do such an amazing job. 

With this lesson I showed the students the art of Jasper Johns and Robert Indiana (especially their number art). Students were allowed to pick any number they wanted (0-9) on papers that I had already copied for them on 12" x 9" multi media paper. 

My kiddos were instructed to draw a pattern all over the number and then color it using crayons. We discussed how important it was to use good craftsmanship and to do our best! 

 This took one 50 minute class period. 

 On the next art class, students finished coloring their patterns and then painted the background using either warm or cool liquid watercolors.

Here is another idea I found on Pinterest by 

Blanka Weisgärberová Lakomá. My version is different but I wanted to give her credit.

On the first day we looked at various photos of winter skies and a photo of the Great Northern Lights. Students could paint the sky any colors they liked but they had to be the cool colors. I provided blue, white, purple and green tempera paint for students to mix on their papers.  

On the second day students drew a village or city on a 18" x 6" piece of paper, traced it with a black permanent marker and glued it to the bottom of their sky. This took around two classes (50 minutes each). 

Lastly, students used Tacky glue to glue plastic snowflakes on the sky. I purchased these on Amazon. They were encouraged to draw additional snowflakes or dots of snow with an oil pastel around them.

 Beautiful results!!!

I wasn't sure how this was going to turn out with my kindergartners but they really did a great job! 

I showed them how to draw a winter tree with a black oil pastel on a 12" x 9" piece of multi media paper. They took a white oil pastel, drew snow in the sky and colored snow around the bottom of their tree. They could add a snowman, a bird or anything they thought would look nice in their winter landscape. 

 The last two steps were to paint over the sky with liquid watercolors. They could use blue, purple and green. Lastly, they sprinkled salt while it was still wet all over the sky creating the appearance of ice crystals. You can see my demonstration video below. 

The next day students rubbed any extra salt off , glued a piece of black paper to the back (I helped them with this) and drew snowflakes around the edges with a white construction paper crayon.
