1st grade Henri Matisse watercolor collage

1st grade Henri Matisse Watercolor Collages
This lesson took three, fifty minute class periods. On the first day students folded a piece of 12" x 18" multi media paper into eight sections. On each box students used various watercolor methods to create textures. Salt, plastic wrap, vegetable oil resist, oil pastel resist, dry brush, wet on wet were just a few of the methods used. They had to rush to get this part finished. See my demonstration videos below.

For the next two classes, students learned all about organic and geometric shapes and then created their  collages. See the video below for part two of the lesson.

Students loved learning how to make spirals and being free to cut organic shapes to make a pleasing collage.

All for Art Fundraiser

All For Art Fundraiser 2019

I completely forgot to write about our "All for Art" fundraiser last year. Forgive me!
I started this around five years ago and the kids love it!
We have a contest to see what class brings in the most money to buy a new painting for our art gallery. The winning class gets to paint or slime the gym teacher. He is such a good sport.
Here is a picture of what we raised this year
This year we had enough money to buy two pieces of art!
Thomas Rush and Carol MacConnell https://www.carolmacconnell.com/pages/about. You can clink on their links to see more of their work.

These are the paintings the kids voted on to add to our gallery.
We all assembled in the gym and had a big unveiling!
Thanks to Mr. Waits for being such a good sport and allowing the winning class to paint him!

Pop art numbers kindergarten lesson

Pop Art Numbers kindergarten lesson

My demonstration video.

It's January and my kindergarten students are showing so much growth! Our classroom teachers do such an amazing job.
With this lesson I showed the students the art of Jasper Johns and Robert Indiana (especially their number art). Students were allowed to pick any number they wanted (0-9) on papers that I had already copied for them on 12" x 9" multi media paper.
My kiddos were instructed to draw a pattern all over the number and then color it using crayons. We discussed how important it was to use good craftsmanship and to do our best!

This took one 50 minute class period.

On the next art class, students finished coloring their patterns and then painted the background using either warm or cool liquid watercolors.

1st grade winter city collage

1st Grade Winter City Collage
Here is another idea I found on Pinterest by

Blanka Weisgärberová LakomáMy version is different but I wanted to give her credit.

Part one of my demonstration video.

Part two of my demonstration video.

On the first day we looked at various photos of winter skies and a photo of the Great Northern Lights. Students could paint the sky any colors they liked but they had to be the cool colors. I provided blue, white, purple and green tempera paint for students to mix on their papers.

On the second day students drew a village or city on a 18" x 6" piece of paper, traced it with a black permanent marker and glued it to the bottom of their sky. This took around two classes (50 minutes each).

Lastly, students used Tacky glue to glue plastic snowflakes on the sky. I purchased these on Amazon. They were encouraged to draw additional snowflakes or dots of snow with an oil pastel around them.

 Beautiful results!!!
