1st grade art lesson Frank Lloyd Wright Stained Glass Windows

1st Grade Stained Glass Windows
This project turned out beautiful and the children loved the results. I introduced the students to the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. We discussed his famous buildings and beautiful stained glass windows. I provided the students with a 11" x  9" piece of paper that had a frame copied on it for them to plan out their designs. Using a pencil, students traced various geometric shapes and patterns (lids, old CD's, plastic geometric shapes from an  old math curriculum kit etc.).

After they planned out their design onto the copier paper, students placed an overhead transparency on top (writing their name in the corner) and used black glue to trace over the shapes. Most students got the hang of it. I had to remind them to not let the glue bottle tip touch the plastic or it wouldn't create a smooth line.

On day two, students used permanent markers to color in their shapes. I reminded them to start at the top of their film and work their way down so they wouldn't smear their colors.

Next students took a 12" x 9" piece of black paper, folded it in half (like a greeting card) and placed a pattern at the top on the folded part. They traced around the sides and bottom of the pattern and keeping the paper closed they cut out the box, creating a frame for their art.

The last step was to put glue on the back of the frame and glue it to the front of their art (glue side).
They really loved the results and I'm proud of how they turned out!

Starry Night Pumpkin Patch art lesson for kindergartners

Starry Night Pumpkin Patch
Students love van Gogh, especially his "Starry Night" painting.
On the first day I did a guided lesson on how to make pumpkins appear round. Students were then provided with a paper plate of yellow and red to make orange on their pumpkins (they first outlined their pumpkins with a sharpie).

On the second day we talked about the "Starry Night" painting and how van Gogh used short brush strokes. Students were instructed to use both dark and light green oil pastels to color the pumpkin patch. We then added wind, stars and a moon to the sky. .

Students cut their pumpkins out and glued them to their papers. The final step was to add stems and vines with oil pastels.
